Bonsai Japanese Black Pine / Pinus Thunbergii

70,00

10-year-old Japanese Black Pine Bonsai (Pinus Thunbergii).

Outdoor bonsai to be placed in full sun.

Highly prized by collectors, exhibitors, and enthusiasts, it is indeed an exceptional tree. Its beautiful cracked bark, robustness, and strong needles are all assets that give it true character.

The same applies to how easily it can be shaped due to the flexibility of its branches and its ability to back-bud.

Description

10-year-old Japanese Black Pine Bonsai in a cream-white glazed pot.

Height of the tree: 27 cm

Height of the tree with the pot: 35 cm

Circumference of the nebari (root collar): 10 cm

Characteristics

Vergreen tree with foliage called needles. It belongs to the conifer family because its fruit, the pine cone, has a cone shape.

Native to Japan, it typically grows along coastlines.

Exposure

This is a tree we recommend placing outdoors in full sun all year round.

Watering

Pines require controlled watering. Excess water is fatal to it, especially if the substrate isn’t well-draining. We recommend bringing it into a greenhouse during heavy rain or slightly tilting its pot to drain excess water.

Pruning

The period for major pruning takes place in winter, during the coldest time of the year. Green pruning, known here as pinching, is done when the spring buds begin to widen. You should then pinch and twist the candles based on their vigor: the strongest should be pinched and reduced by about 2/3, the medium ones should be pinched and cut back by half, while the weakest should be left intact.

Fertilizer

You can provide it with fertilizer from spring to autumn. It’s best to use an organic fertilizer, which promotes and preserves mycorrhizae (fungi living in symbiosis with the tree).

Repotting

Every three years, during the growth of the candles and before the new needles appear. We recommend a highly draining substrate like pumice.

Particularity

In Japan, this pine is considered masculine. Its vigor, the texture of its cracked bark, the dark color of its needles, and their stiffness give it this character.
