Description

Bonsai Burning Bush / Pyracantha, 10 years old

Height of the tree: 27 cm

Height of the tree with pot: 35 cm

Circumference of the nebari (root collar): 11 cm

Characteristics

An evergreen tree, it belongs to the Rosaceae family.

Native to Europe, it produces small white flowers in spring that give way to round fruits (small berries) in red, orange, or yellow.

Unlike its distant cousin, the cotoneaster, it has thorns.

Exposure

The Pyracantha is a tree that should preferably be placed in full sun.

Watering

The Pyracantha is a thirsty tree; don’t hesitate to water it generously when its substrate dries out. However, it’s advisable to avoid watering its flowers.

Pruning

Structural pruning (cutting older wood) is preferably done in late autumn or just before the start of spring. Green pruning or pinching is carried out during the growth period.

Fertilizer

From spring to autumn, organic or chemical.

Repotting

Repotting the Pyracantha is done in spring, as soon as the buds begin to swell. We recommend using a draining yet water-retentive substrate, such as Akadama.

Particularity

Pyracantha, or burning bush, comes from Ancient Greek: *pyr* = fire and *acanthos* = thorn. The Burning Bush is an allusion to the biblical episode reported in Exodus 3:2.
