Description
8-year-old European Olive Bonsai / Olea Europaea Sylvestris
Height of the tree: 26 cm
Height of the tree with the pot: 33 cm
Circumference of the nebari (root collar): 16.5 cm
Characteristics
Evergreen tree. It belongs to the Oleaceae family.
Native to Europe, its leaves and fruits are smaller than those of cultivated olive trees.
Exposure
The olive tree is a tree to be placed in full sun. However, it must be protected from cold and frost (greenhouse or indoors).
Watering
The olive tree does not like to be waterlogged, so its watering must be well-regulated to provide the amount necessary for its proper growth.
Pruning
Structural pruning is usually done in spring, around March. Green pruning or pinching, on the other hand, takes place during the growth period from June until the end of autumn.
Fertilizer
From spring to autumn with liquid or solid fertilizer, chemical or organic, according to your preference.
Repotting
The olive tree is a slow-growing tree, and its roots grow slowly as well. If you feed it properly, you should plan to repot it approximately every 4 to 5 years. Repotting is usually done in June. We recommend a draining substrate such as akadama or an akadama-pumice mix.
Particularity
In nature, the olive tree is a true symbol. With its slow growth, it’s not uncommon to find it several centuries old on Mediterranean plateaus. At that age, its olive production decreases significantly, so it is sent to our regions to give it a new life as an ornamental rather than an economic plant. A symbol of peace and longevity, sheltering this small tree at home is like having a touch of permanent sunshine in your outdoor (recommended) or indoor space.
