Description
Wild Apple Bonsai (Malus Sylvestris), 15 years old.
Height of the tree: 43 cm
Height of the tree with pot: 52 cm
Circumference of the nebari (root collar): 25 cm
Characteristics
Deciduous tree (loses its leaves in winter). It belongs to the Rosaceae family.
Native to Europe, it is highly appreciated for its small flowers ranging from pink to white and its small red fruits, rarely exceeding 2 cm.
Exposure
The wild apple tree adapts easily to all types of climates. It is best to place it in full sun throughout the year, except during very hot periods when it is advisable to move it to a partially shaded spot. It is frost-resistant, but it is recommended to protect it from temperatures below -2 °C.
Watering
Abundant in summer and moderate in winter. During flowering, avoid watering the flowers, as this may cause them to wilt quickly, reducing the charm of your bonsai.
Pruning
Structural pruning is generally done in late autumn or late winter before the sap rises. Green pruning or pinching is done during the growth period, from June until the end of autumn.
Fertilizer
From spring to autumn with liquid or solid fertilizer, chemical or organic, depending on your preference.
Repotting
Repotting is done every 2 or 3 years depending on the condition of the substrate and the water drainage through the pot. We recommend a draining substrate such as akadama, an akadama-pumice mix, or a zeolite-chabasite mix.
Particularity
Following the abundant flowering of the apple tree, it develops small red apples reminiscent of old-fashioned orchards. However, to preserve the tree’s energy, we recommend removing most of the fruits to avoid overly weakening the tree. Indeed, fruit production requires significant energy from a bonsai.
